Porsche has recently announced a recall affecting 2,941 units of its electric Macan model. The issue arises from the vehicle's headlights, which have been deemed excessively bright according to U.S. regulations. This problem poses potential risks for oncoming drivers by reducing their visibility and increasing the likelihood of accidents.
Headlight Software Error
The recall specifically targets Porsche Macan Electric models from the years 2024 and 2025, manufactured between March 15 and November 4, 2024. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified that the headlight-control software in these vehicles was programmed to European standards rather than those required in the United States. As a result, the light beams exceed the brightness levels specified under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108.
Rectifying the Issue
Porsche has informed the NHTSA that they have already corrected this programming error in later production vehicles. However, it is estimated that all vehicles included in this recall are affected by the issue. Owners of these vehicles will need to visit a dealership to have the headlight software reprogrammed at no cost, as the fix cannot be applied through an over-the-air update.
Notification and Customer Support
Porsche plans to send out owner notification letters on January 24, 2025. For those seeking immediate assistance or more information, Porsche's customer service is available at 1-800-767-7243. The automaker has assigned the reference number ARC5 to this particular recall.
Macan's Electric Evolution
The electric Macan debuted in 2024 as one of the first models based on Porsche's Premium Platform Electric (PPE), which it shares with Audi's Q6 E-Tron SUV and A6 E-Tron sedan. This platform brings advanced technology initially introduced in the Porsche Taycan to a broader market, including an 800-volt charging system capable of achieving a peak charge rate of 270 kW.
In its initial release year, only dual-motor variants such as the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo were available. For 2025, Porsche expanded its lineup by introducing a more affordable single-motor rear-wheel drive base model and a dual-motor Macan 4S. While Porsche continues to sell gasoline-powered Macans alongside their electric counterparts, they plan to offer only electric models starting in 2026.
