Tesla has announced a recall of 239,382 of its electric vehicles due to a potential issue with the rearview camera display. This recall affects various models including the 2024-2025 Model 3 and Model S sedans, as well as the 2023-2025 Model X and Model Y crossovers. The problem stems from circuit boards in these vehicles which could short out, leading to a failure in the rearview camera image display, as outlined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Understanding the Recall
The short-circuit condition is caused by reverse current on startup. If this issue occurs, drivers might encounter a blank screen when shifting into reverse gear. In such cases, drivers would need to rely on traditional methods like shoulder checks and mirrors for backing up, according to NHTSA guidelines.
Extent and Response
Although a large number of vehicles are included in this recall, Tesla estimates that only about 2% of these cars may actually have this defect. The company has recorded 887 warranty claims and 68 field reports related to this issue. Fortunately, there have been no reported collisions, injuries, or fatalities associated with this defect.
Addressing the Issue
Tesla has taken proactive measures by releasing a free over-the-air (OTA) software update to rectify this issue. Additionally, they are working to identify vehicles with circuit board failures or component stress that could lead to such failures. For these identified vehicles, Tesla will replace the affected computers at no cost to the owners.
Customer Guidance
Owners can expect notification letters to be mailed by March 7, 2025. In the meantime, they can reach out to Tesla's customer service for further assistance. The reference number for this recall is SB-25-00-001.
