Revolution in Battery Capacity
New speculations suggest that the Tesla Model Y, specifically the 'Juniper' version, will receive a significant update in the form of a new 95 kWh battery. This move would represent an increase of more than 26% compared to the current largest battery capacity of 75 kWh. The combination of a larger battery capacity, better energy management, and aerodynamic improvements could potentially boost the vehicle's range to an astounding 800 km.
Challenges with New Chassis
Deploying a larger battery might necessitate the development of a new chassis. It is uncertain whether the 95 kWh battery will fit into the existing Model Y chassis, which could lead to necessary structural modifications. This is why models S and X are much larger vehicles – their chassis are designed to accommodate bigger batteries.
Competitive Struggle in the European Market
Despite these innovations, the Tesla Model Y faces stiff competition in Europe. In the first six months of 2024, the best-selling new car was the Dacia Sandero, followed by Volkswagen Golf, Renault Clio, and Peugeot 208. The Tesla Model Y saw a decline in deliveries by a significant 26%, indicating a need for model refreshment.
Customers Demand More Value
On the home front, Model Y RWD owners have the option to increase their range by 30 or 50 miles, but only for an additional cost of $1,000 and $1,600 respectively. This move has not been well-received by all customers, who view it as a money trap. On the other hand, Model Y continues to lead in production charts in the USA, both overall and in the electric vehicle category.
Upcoming Changes
Although Elon Musk claims no major changes will come before 2025, it is evident that the market expects updates and innovations. Given that Model 3 has already undergone a refresh known as 'Highland', it is logical to anticipate similar steps for Model Y.
